The art of reducing The Olsens' footprint

The Olsen Melbourne – Art Series is committed to embedding sustainability into every facet of our daily operations. We recognise that sustainability is an ongoing journey and are continually striving to reduce our carbon footprint wherever possible. Below are some of the initiatives we have implemented to date.

Dry Amenities

We are delighted to share our ongoing commitment to reducing single-use plastics in our guest rooms. As part of this initiative, we have made a significant decision to eliminate single-use dry amenities, taking a bold step towards a plastic-free environment.

We understand the importance of preserving our planet for future generations. By removing single-use plastic amenities such as toothbrushes, combs, and shower caps from our guest rooms, we are significantly reducing our environmental footprint. Instead, guests can request environmentally friendly dry amenities via our Guest Services on Demand QR Code.

Large Amenities

As part of our ongoing efforts, we have made the proactive decision to move to large format amenities, replacing our single-use plastic common amenities with eco-friendly pump dispensers throughout the hotel. By eliminating single-use plastic bottles, we are significantly reducing the amount of waste generated by our operations. This commitment aligns with our dedication to environmental stewardship and reflects our ongoing efforts to improve sustainability in all aspects of our hotel.

Food Waste

At Spoonbill, we are committed to reducing food wastage and promoting sustainable practices across our food and beverage outlets and conferencing department. We understand the importance of minimising our environmental impact while delivering exceptional culinary experiences to our guests.

We work with local suppliers aligned to our sustainability focus whilst supporting our local economy. Our Culinary team constantly seeks opportunities to incorporate Indigenous ingredients into our food product and again, in support of local business. Our menu is curated by season to ensure that we are presenting the best ingredients of the time of the year. In addition, our teams proactively maintain FIFO principles and trend based ordering systems as well as measurement of food waste. Combining all levers, our goal is to innovatively and consistently reduce waste to ensure that we act responsibly whilst delivering the highest of standards.

Recycling

The Olsen’s waste management program dictates that all hotel waste is separated into co-mingle, cardboard, food waste and general waste, minimising our impact on landfill.  In addition, we have

removed single use plastic water bottles and replaced with glass as part of our efforts to remove all SUP from operations.

Community Support

We are committed to maintaining strong connections with our local community and give back wherever possible. The Olsen engages with many Indigenous businesses such as Sobah Beverages and The Unexpected Guest to represent the best of local business and provide education to our guests.

The Olsen also engages with a wide range of hotel schools to provide practical training and experience to emerging talent within the Tourism industry.
